Sound Ronda combines the theme of stochastic events, dear to Chiggio, with that of sound research, for the precision with the theme of random music that the object is able to produce thanks to the intervention of the user of the work. The object is made up of 5 threaded steel rods on which washers can slide. Mechanically rotating the frame around the axes that support it, the washers slide stochastically and noisy on the rods, giving life to unexpected configurations and producing sounds in a playful way.
We remember that Chiggio understood the interrelation between visual research and sound research at a very young age. It all started with an exhibition-concert at the Teatro Verdi in Padua, in 1961, curated by Sylvano Bussotti. Here Chiggio met John Cage, Earle Brown and La Monte Young whose scores force the listener to adopt a sensory approach open to the unknown and chance. Chiggio therefore got himself a low-frequency generator, a reel-to-reel tape recorder, put it all together, a rudimentary mixer and began to carry out the first experiments: recorded frequencies, stretched, halving the scrolling speed or reassembly. In 1963, he met Teresa Rampazzi and began a collaboration that would focus on the study of sound, not musical and vocal sound, but a synthesized sound made with analog equipment. In 1964, at the 32nd Venice Art Biennale, Chiggio and Rampazzi presented Ambienti 1964, an original soundtrack composed expressly for the room set up by the N Group. In 1965, Chiggio and Rampazzi founded the NPS group (Nuove Proposte Sonore), conducting research on the timbre and density of sound events, events later called sound objects.
